Head of Sales – OTC Products -  UK Market – Dublin (Ireland) based – January 2019 - Urgent

Our client, a growing pharmaceutical company wish to appoint an experienced Head of Sales for the UK market based out of their Dublin offices to join their senior management team. The successful person will be responsible for our client’s ethical and OTC products in the UK retail pharmacy channels.

The position is full time and permanent.

Role Description

This role is focussed on implementing the division strategies across our client’s core business in the retail Pharmacy channels. You will work with a team of 2 Sales Managers, 1 Key Account Manager and their team of (14+) Business Development managers to ensure that all of their product portfolio is managed and promoted in line with the company objectives and targets.  This will involve promoting their entire range of therapies, devices, diagnostic equipment, services, Prescription medicines and food supplements. You will be responsible for liaising with the Directors and other department heads to ensure that all facets of the divisions are running smoothly, on target and within budget. This role requires a very strong understanding of the Pharmacy Sector – including Independent, Regional and National Chain organisations. The role will require you to spend min 50% of your time in the field with the Sales Managers and their teams and also time in the Head Office in Dublin


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Second line manager to 2 Sales Managers’  / 1 KAM on a day to day basis. . Monitor and assess their own performance and support their IDP.
  • Work with Product Managers (Marketing) to ensure all Brand Plans are being carried out in the field by the relevant teams
  • Implement via your team, the strategic plan for growing our business through the key National Accounts – in both sectors
  • Coordinate with L&D to ensure all of our BDM/SM’s are continuing to develop their clinical and sales skills
  • Work with SM and HR to ensure all BDM’s are being assessed properly via PDMP process
  • Ensure that SM and BDM have accurate reports and are using them to better manage their division and individual territories.
  • Review division performance with Directors based on all agreed KPI’s
  • Monitor any policy changes that may have an impact on our business
  • Work to help create a very focussed team who have clear objectives and a result focus
  • Encourage a strong team focus within the teams and the embodiment of our core values
  • Support and develop Hi-potential team members to grow within their team and within the company
  • Work to encourage a strong relationship between Sales and Marketing
  • Effective communicator with all levels – both internally and externally
  • Work with Directors to set clear and transparent Targets for all teams


  • Business or Science related third level qualification required
  • Masters /MBA in related field – Business, Sales, Marketing - preferable
  • Professional qualifications and memberships desirable

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • 10+years’ in sales with experience in related areas (Optometry / Pharmacy) – preferable
  • Flexible approach to managing work life balance and prepared to travel regularly across UK and between Ireland the UK.
  • Personal Effectiveness - must be able to work under pressure and autonomously; successfully manage a very diverse and demanding workload.
  • Experience in account management in retail pharmacy channels in the UK is desirable
  • Ability to take on challenging product knowledge for a broad and diverse portfolio
  • Ability to influence and lead others without direct-line management responsibility
  • Energy, resilience and enthusiasm is a key advantage in this role

  • Organisational skills - self-motivated and able to demonstrate strong organisation and prioritisation skills in a sales and relationship management environment.
  • Strong technical and computer literacy; skilled in the use of tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel.

Candidates should have current or previous Head of Sales or Senior Sales Management experience in the UK pharmaceutical/Healthcare industries.
